Why make this game?

SpaceJammers was created to fill a gap that I feel exists within the top-down rogue-like genre. While I enjoyed "The Binding of Isaac" and similar games, I wanted to be able to play these cooperatively with friends. I also wanted a game with a more visceral feel as well as arcade elements from games I played in the 90's.
However, I didn't want a game like Diablo which had involved inventory management and large maps. Team members often end up either waiting around for someone to sell their loot or just plain losing sight of one another in such a vast landscape. I want to keep the experience as clean and tight as possible, so no one is ever waiting around. The whole team should always be moving through the game at the same pace, regardless of experience level or skill.

Lovely art style! Do you have static images that show the characters more clearly? I'd really like to pin one to my pinterest boards but current thumbnails don't show them well. =>

p.s. cute font but it's barely readable here. xD

Thanks I'm glad you like the art!

I have some more screenshots on the website: http://spreadshotstudios.com/SpaceJammersGame.html

It's difficult now for me to make screenshots of the characters now since I've made them all procedurally generated. But I will be offering little sprites from the game for use as forum avatars, desktop icons, etc as Kickstarter rewards later this month.

Are you saying the font on the itch page is hard to read or the in-game font?

For screenshots / sprites: understood. =) I think some static twitter pics of the characters atlas brought me here; pinterest does not show animated gifs well and clear, and I don't think the one I saw had a game title in it to be a good bookmark, so just asking.

Fonts: I meant the itch.io page. It's a pity I can't read other people's Q&A because of it. xD Now I'm replying, the non-retro font's super clear though.

Ok, I didn't realize it was hard to read. I wish there was an option to change the font size that would help readability. Maybe I'll change the font.

Game is really good, but I have problem with it: on startup screen with 3 fields: "New game - Options - Save/Exit", higlight switches itself constantly between those three fields, and it's fast, so I have to try to hit correct button. Moving cursor over one field doesn't stop switching. I don't have any controller connected, just PS2 keyboard and USB Mouse (+ Wacom tablet but its disconnected atm). Phenom II X4/GTX 750 and Linux Mint 18 64bit.

However when I hit correct button game seems to work ok, and its awesome on Linux - big THX :)

Assuming this is like version 0.375 or something, this may be fixed in the preview build. I have redone that menu to play nicer with the mouse. I haven't heard of this bug before but it sounds like it's getting input from something because the mouse always takes control if it hovers over one of the fields.

Space Jammers

some gameplay

Check this another game =)

I hope you're still working on a Mac release! This game looks absolutely amazing and I'd love to play it. :)

Yep, Mac build is available now and it'll continue to be updated at least until the game goes on sale (which will be after the Kickstarter wraps up sometime in October). After that, I'll need to see if YoYo games fixes certain issues with GameMakers Mac exporter. I don't want to get into a situation during development where I'm unable to support/fix certain issues for paying Mac users due to game engine incompatibilities beyond my control. Hope that makes sense. I'm glad you like the game!

Do you plan on adding an online function?

I do, it will be part of a stretch goal for the upcoming Kickstarter as I will need to bring on another programmer to help implement Online Multiplayer while I finish up the rest of the game. Being the only developer on this project (I currently do the Art/Design/Programming/Marketing myself), trying to implement Online MP would drastically push back the release which I don't think anyone wants. But if enough people show their support and interest in the game then I can get Online MP in for the release.

Update v0.359

This one includes lots of new effects and optimizations to old effects so the game should run even smoother. Two player skills have also been modified and the level lighting has again been evened out.

  • Optimized effects, with many new ones added
  • Explosive items now spawn in more places
  • Minor bug fixes and edits to UI
  • Big explosions spawn debris that can damage enemies
  • More pre-made rooms added to procedural generation list
  • Level lights have been edited to prevent blown out lighting
  • Botch's skill changed to spotlight in front that pushes enemies/bolts away
  • Toad's skill changed to spawn zombies that seek and blow up nearby enemies

This game looks great and am having a blast playing it. Since I can't comment on another site to vote because am not making a account there. No to crowdfunding and yes to custom characters.

Update 0.355 is now LIVE! Get it now!

Change list:

- Mouse controls have been GREATLY improved. Much smoother camera movement now. Cursor can also move anywhere on screen instead of being limited to a radius around the player.

- Added gamepad vibration when hit.

- When playing co-op, each player can drop out from the pause menu.

- Minor improvements to lasers and effects.

- Added flashing heart above player head to indicate low health.

- Changes to level generation so lighting is not too overblown.

- Each levels' random ruleset is displayed at the top of the screen.

- Players will no longer collide with each other.

- Removed flicker from CRT shader.

This game hasn't been working properly for me. After around thirty or so seconds the game glitches out showing a black or "Corrupted" screen. I don't know if this is just from me running this game on a Macintosh computer but hopefully this is fixed! :)

Are you running the latest version (0.351)?

I have been having issues with the Mac version. I get very unpredictable results when running the game on Mac as opposed to every other platform, not sure why, but it could just be that Macs aren't or haven't historically been built for gaming. I am considering dropping support for Mac in the future, at least until the game is finished.

I wasn't running 0.351. I downloaded the new version but the game still froze but in a different way. Instead of the game's screen going black but with the game still running in the back ground, the game stopped completely and a little box popped up with the screen the game froze at. When I clicked the "OK" button on the box, the game completely shut down. I am able to play the game for thirty or so seconds and then the game freezes.

I hope you don't drop support for Mac because this game seems really awesome. :)

v0.351 is Live! Come and get it!

Should be more stable experience if you were previously running into game stopping bugs. Check out the new options menu for configuring graphics and gameplay settings.

Please leave comments if you run into any issues and I will do my best to fix them. Enjoy!

i love this game and thx for linux support but i have issues with gamepad i hope it will be fixed

Currently only Xbox controllers are supported. I am having issues getting support for PS3, Logitech and other generic controllers but I am looking into it.

Please note, no other gamepads other than Xbox or PS3/4 are supported by Mac OSX.

(Edited 1 time)

what about linux version?? i do have games from gamemaker that support my gamepad such as hotline miami. i use logitech f310

Ps3/4, Xbox gamepads should work with Linux. I can't confirm about Logitech since I don't have one.

okey thx for reply i will try to use xbox map application to play this game on local co-op

since logitech 310 does not work for now

Really very excited for this game

Whoooo Me too!

The game starts to load forever and basically locks up my computer in the tutorial when I press tab to switch weapons. Can't even bring up the task manager to close it, have to hard reset the computer. Tried this 2 times with the same results. Works well otherwise. This was with ver. 3.49. Any fix for this in 3.50? I don't really want to try it again if no fix has been applied.

Win 8.1, i5-3317U 1.70 ghz (2.6 ghz), Intel Hd graphics 4000. 8 GB RAM.

The game levels load 10x faster in v0.350 (about 3-5 seconds depending on cpu speed).

I'm not aware of any problems with switching weapons that causes the compute to freeze. Does it give you any error messages when it freezes? If so can you post here what it says, that would help me greatly.

Before anything else, please make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics chip direct from Intel (don't download from 3rd parties). Now since you are running an Intel Hd graphics 4000, that means it is an integrated graphics (on the CPU chip) and is not a discreet graphics card. This is a rather low end graphics chip, I would not be surprised that you are having problems since integrated graphics cards do not have good performance for playing games.
I'll need to hunt down some minimum specs for integrated graphics cards, but off the top of my head, I believe this is your chief problem when running the game.

I will be releasing a new update tomorrow which will give you the option for turning off a slew of graphics options so you can try turning off everything and seeing if that helps. From testing, I have found a huge performance boost on my low end laptop when turning off/down certain settings.

Ok, so after a few minutes of googling, it looks like a lot of games have problems with the Intel HD 4000 series graphics chips for the reasons I listed above. Since this is a problem with Intel hardware and not the Gamemaker Studio engine, there isn't much I can do.

My recommendation would be to play the game on a computer with a discreet graphics card.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention, this helps me create a recommended minimum hardware spec for the game so folks know whether they can run the game. I apologize there isn't much I can do but like I said, a new update tomorrow will allow you to turn off graphics settings, so try that.

Thanks for the reply! I don't get any error message. It starts to load from the harddrive a lot, so much that I can't alt tab or bring up the task manager, at least not unless I wait for a very long time, probably. The game is frozen but the music still plays.

I have played Nuclear Throne on this computer for at least 10 hours without any problems, which is another game maker game.

I will try your new build tomorrow and see if I have the same problem with it

(Edited 1 time)

Oh ok, so the last portion of the level loading just takes a while on Low spec machines. It looks like the game has frozen but it hasn't you just need to keep waiting for it to load. The newer version loads faster but it will still appear that the game has frozen. Since you are running on a lower spec hardware and they just don't load as fast as mid-high end PC's. Just be patient and it'll finish.

Keep in mind the game is still heavily in development and the code won't be optimized until its near completion.

By the way, how long on average does Nuclear Throne levels take to load on your computer? When I played their first Early Access release I noticed their levels loaded pretty slow for me.

(Edited 1 time)

Hi again! I tried ver 3.50 and I encountered no problems with this version. This game loads a bit faster than Nuclear Throne. Both loads pretty fast.

Great Game :)
keep up the good work

Thanks! Working on update that adds more options (toggle screen effects, etc)

Heads up, new update coming this weekend. Levels will load 10x faster and support for borderless window and borderless fullscreen window for making screen capture easier for Let's Players as well as better performance on lower end computers.

i downloaded it a couple of days ago, and during the tutorial the game crashed my entire computer. The screen was frozen and the music was working, but a sound effect was on a loop indefinetly.

The game is still awesome though!

Thanks! Glad you enjoy!

Yea sounds like your computer just crashed. I haven't heard from anyone yet about crashing. Has it crashed at all since or was it just that one time?

Can you give me any info on your system? What OS are you running? 32/64 bit?

Well i deleted it afterwards because my computer hasnt crashed before and it is relatively new, so i was afraid. Im on Windows 10 64 bit. Maybe it is just an isolated problem though. I will try it again.

I wouldn't be too worried, sometimes computers just crash, especially Windows ;)

If the game consistently crashes your computer every time you open it, then yea something is wrong with the game, but this is the first time out of thousands of plays that anyone has mentioned a crash. But it would help me out a lot to know if that is the case so I can fix whatever the cause is.

My computer just crashed. Thankyou for replying back.

This seems like an awesome game....

sucks i wont be able to buy it due to issues ;-;

May I ask why you wouldn't be able to buy the game?
